On January 16th of this year, Yusef Shakur opened Urban Network Bookstore, a multipurpose shop offering literature, paintings, music, and a music studio, as well as discussions, performances, and many other events. Urban Network especially encourages local artists, musicians, and authors to use this venue as a location to sell their merchandise. The shop also functions as an event venue, including discussion series, performances, book signings, and film screenings. On September 19th, Urban Network will host the first of several “Brotha 2 Brotha” discussion series, aimed at creating a sense of familiarity between Detroiters and city council/charter commission candidates in the forthcoming elections. There are currently 3 events scheduled in September, with more to come in October (attached are the 3 fliers for the September events). All events will consist of a “meet and greet” session, an interview, and an audience-led discussion. The schedule is below:
- September 19th – Raphael B. Johnson (City Council Candidate) @ Urban Network Bookstore, 4:30-7:30pm
- September 26th – Reggie ‘Reg’ Davis (Charter Commission Candidate) @ Urban Network Bookstore, 4:30-7:30pm
- September 29th – Ken Cockrel (City Council President) @ King Solomon Baptist Church, 5:30-8:30pm
Urban Network will be hosting more events in the near future, including a film series, Do-It-Yourself Publication/Production events, book signings, and more.
