Re-Affirming Self-Evident Truths

Last year, in the little pamphlet (R)evolution in the 21st Century, I wrote:

"We need to RE-Visit, RE-Affirm and Act on the Self-Evident Truths in the 1776 Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

This year, therefore, I was delighted to read the article in the July 4 issue of Reader Supported News calling the Declaration of Independence ”a living document”, “and after citing a long list of repeated injuries and usurpations, declaring our present government “illegitimate,” advocating for its dissolution, and calling on fellow citizens to do the same.

The article’s author is Carl Gibson, 26, of Lexington, Kentucky. He is co-founder of US Uncut, a nationwide creative direct-action movement that mobilized tens of thousands of activists against corporate tax avoidance and budget cuts in the months leading up to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Gibson’s article adds to my growing sense that the time may be approaching for a national gathering of the many widely different local and regional groups that have recognized the need for and are beginning to make The Next American Revolution.

We have a lot to discuss and to share.
