Boggs Center Activities
Visits, Tours & Learning Journeys
Each year we host hundreds of people from across the country and globe for Visits with Boggs Center members and our comrades. Some visitors take part in the From Growing Our Economy to Growing Our Souls tour, our famous tour of the East Side. Others stay for longer Learning Journeys, which include opportunities to explore practice sites in our local network (e.g., Freedom Dreams, Birwood House, and Feedom Freedom Growers).
Monthly Political Discussions
Our Monthly Political Discussion series gives members of the Boggs Center and our comrades an opportunity to reflect on social practice that is at the heart of revolutionary theory. We invite individuals, organizations, and collectives aligned with the Center’s mission to participate in discussions on the last Sunday of each month.
Study Circles
Through our Study Circles we engage activists, artists, and thinkers from across Detroit and beyond. Our goal is to cultivate our communities’ capacity to engage media critically, make connections between the past, present, and future. Through collective study, we practice dialectical thinking in ways that expand our imaginations and help us develop grounded political assessments.
Projects & Initiatives
Detroit Summer is an intergenerational, grassroots, multicultural youth collective based at the Boggs Center since the 1990s. Riverwise is a community-based magazine created by a team of authors, writers, photojournalists, parents, grandparents, students, organizers, activists, artists, educators, and visionaries. The Boggs Legacy Series is a community art exhibition focused on the history, thought and practice of the Boggs Center.
Publications
Living for Change is a weekly newsletter that provides the perspective and activities of the Boggs Center and related organizations. It feature a thought-provoking column called Thinking for Ourselves in addition to media recommendations and information on upcoming local events. Boggs Center members have also written numerous articles, pamphlets, and books reflecting on what time it is on the clock of the world.
Past Events & Programs
Check out some of the events and programs we have hosted in and around the Boggs Center in recent years. These include everything from book launches and poetry readings to art exhibitions and performances at The Gallery of Revolution, and from facilitated conversations on freedom schooling, food sovereignty, and community safety to intensive, week-long political education series, among other national gatherings.
Practice Sites
Our Practices Sites exemplify visionary, place-based organizing. Birwood House encourages leadership and promotes multi-generational interactions to build healthy, strong, and sustainable neighborhoods; Feedom Freedom Growers nurtures positive community relationships and impactful youth-focused programs through a community garden as well as a community resource center; and Freedom Dreams is dedicated to reducing gentrification and fostering community self-determination.
