Creating Futures Now: A Year of Visionary Organizing

In 2023 we are commemorating the 60th anniversary of the publication of The American Revolution by James Boggs. Events throughout the year will reflect how the theories outlined in The American Revolution continue to inform our practice in community today.

Detroit Summer

Detroit Summer is an intergenerational collective based at the Boggs Center in Detroit, Michigan, with the goal of empowering local youth to improve their communities. The program was founded in 1992 by Grace Lee and James Boggs.

Gallery of Revolution

The Gallery of Revolution features the work of revolutionary and social justice-oriented artists on the second floor of the Boggs Center. The work of each artist is showcased for a period of three months. Each gallery opening involves a conversation and reception with the featured artist.

Political Discussions

Political Discussions give members of the Boggs Center and our comrades an opportunity to reflect on social practice that is at the heart of revolutionary theory. We invite individuals, organizations, and collectives aligned with the Center’s mission to participate in discussions each month.

Study Circles

Through our Study Circles we engage activists, artists, and thinkers from across Detroit and beyond. Our goal is to cultivate our communities’ capacity to engage media critically, make connections between the past, present, and future, and practice dialectical thinking to develop grounded political assessments.

From Growing Our Economy to Growing Our Souls Tour

We host the Tour for people who are eager to be introduced to, and begin to learn about and engage with, the story of Detroit as told from below. This is a story of and by people who are making a way out of no way, and who see opportunities amidst the crises of the present moment.

2023 ISE Summer Intensive Course

In July 2023, the Institute for Social Ecology is hosting its annual summer intensive course in Detroit in partnership with the Boggs Center. Participants—local as well as from across North America—will spend six days together studying and learning the core ideas of social ecology and the practice and legacy of transformative community action in Detroit.
